Bacolod City Takes the Spotlight as NIRAAM 2026 Opens with Over 10,000 Delegates

Bacolod City once again proved its reputation as a vibrant hub for major events as it hosted the inaugural Negros Island Regional Athletic Association Meet (NIRAAM) 2026, which officially opened on March 1 at the Panaad Park and Stadium. The historic regional sports gathering brought together more than 10,000 delegates, athletes, coaches, and officials from across the newly established Negros Island Region (NIR).

The week-long competition, which runs until March 7, is considered a milestone event for the region following the formation of the Negros Island Region in 2024. For many participants, NIRAAM 2026 is more than just a sporting event—it is a celebration of unity, youth empowerment, and the pursuit of athletic excellence.

A Historic Regional Gathering

A total of 12 delegations are competing in the event, representing different provinces and cities across Negros Island and nearby areas. These include Siquijor, Bais, Guihulngan, Tanjay, Bayawan, Canlaon, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Kabankalan, Silay, Negros Occidental, and host city Bacolod.

Based on official records, the meet has gathered 10,745 delegates, composed of 5,462 student-athletes, 1,255 coaches, and 4,003 members of delegation support committees. Their participation highlights the growing enthusiasm for sports development in the region.

Athletes are competing in 27 sporting events, ranging from traditional favorites such as athletics, basketball, and volleyball to other competitive disciplines that showcase the diverse talents of young athletes.

Grand Opening at Panaad Stadium

The opening ceremony at Panaad Park and Stadium was a spectacular celebration that featured colorful performances, inspiring speeches, and a strong sense of regional pride. Thousands of spectators filled the venue to witness the historic moment.

Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya welcomed the delegations and encouraged the young athletes to give their best throughout the competition.

“This is your time—make the most of NIRAAM 2026. We believe the next Olympian will come from the Negros Island Region, especially Bacolod City,” Gasataya said during his address.

His message resonated with many of the student-athletes who have spent months preparing for the regional competition.

Meanwhile, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson reminded participants that the meet serves as an important pathway toward the Palarong Pambansa, the country’s most prestigious sporting event for student-athletes.

“This competition is a stepping stone. It is your opportunity to prove yourselves and earn the chance to represent the region on the national stage,” Lacson said.

The Role of Sports in Youth Development

The event was also attended by Department of Education Undersecretary Peter Irving Corvera, who emphasized the importance of athletics in shaping disciplined and resilient young individuals.

“Sports keep our youth disciplined and resilient. You have earned your place here—it was not by accident,” Corvera told the athletes.

His message underscored the Department of Education’s commitment to strengthening sports programs in schools while encouraging students to pursue excellence both in academics and athletics.

Cultural Performances and Fireworks Display

The opening program showcased not only athletic pride but also the rich culture and creativity of Bacolod City.

Spectators were treated to lively performances from the iconic MassKara dancers, whose colorful costumes and energetic choreography added excitement to the evening’s celebration.

Students from Handumanan National High School and Domingo Lacson National High School also delivered impressive field demonstrations that highlighted discipline, teamwork, and coordination.

The ceremony concluded with a dazzling fireworks display, lighting up the Bacolod night sky and symbolizing the bright future of the region’s young athletes.

Bacolod Takes Early Lead in Medal Standings

As the competition progressed in the first few days of the meet, the host city quickly emerged as a strong contender in several sporting events.

Bacolod City currently leads the medal tally, securing 7 gold medals, 6 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals. The early success reflects the dedication of Bacolod’s athletes and the strong support they receive from coaches, schools, and the local government.

The medal race remains intense, however, as other delegations from Negros Oriental and neighboring cities continue to compete fiercely across different sporting disciplines.

Tight Security for the Week-Long Event

To ensure the safety of all participants and visitors, the Police Regional Office – Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) implemented extensive security measures throughout the duration of the games.

Around 145 police personnel were deployed across playing venues, billeting quarters, and key areas in Bacolod City. The deployment includes 75 personnel from the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office and 25 from the Regional Mobile Force Battalion, providing additional support to the Bacolod City Police Office.

Authorities have also established visibility patrols, monitoring teams, and rapid response units to ensure the event runs smoothly and securely.

Celebrating Sportsmanship and Regional Pride

More than just a competition, NIRAAM 2026 represents the shared aspirations of the Negros Island Region’s youth. It provides a platform for student-athletes to showcase their skills, build friendships, and represent their communities with pride.

For many participants, the event is also a stepping stone toward larger dreams, including representing the region in the Palarong Pambansa and possibly competing at national or international levels in the future.

As the games continue until March 7, excitement remains high across Bacolod City. Schools, families, and sports enthusiasts continue to cheer for their teams while celebrating the spirit of unity that NIRAAM has brought to the region.

With thousands of athletes competing and communities rallying behind them, NIRAAM 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most memorable and inspiring sporting events ever held in the Negros Island Region.
