St. James the Greater Church in Talisay City, Negros Occidental: A Unique Replica of Medjugorje’s Sacred Landmark

Nestled in Hda. Mana-ul, Brgy. Matab-ang, Talisay City, Negros Occidental, the St. James the Greater Church stands as a remarkable spiritual and architectural gem. What makes this church truly unique is that it is a faithful replica of the St. James Church in Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina, a site renowned worldwide for the reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six Herzegovinian Croat teenagers in 1981. This connection to Medjugorje, a place of profound Marian devotion, adds a special significance to the church in Talisay City.

The church was made possible through the generosity of the Lacson family, who donated the one-hectare land where it now stands. The idea for the church originated when a priest from Bacolod was searching for land to build a new place of worship. Inspired by their own spiritual journey, the donors decided to create a replica of the St. James Church in Medjugorje, a place that had deeply touched their faith during a pilgrimage nearly three decades ago. This replica is not only the first of its kind in the Philippines but also, according to research by photographer David Brass, the only one in the entire world.

The Lacson family and the project team went to great lengths to ensure that every detail of the original Medjugorje church was meticulously replicated. From the facade and dimensions to the tabernacle, stained glass windows, statues, and even the church pews, no element was overlooked. The result is a stunningly accurate reproduction that captures the essence and spiritual atmosphere of the original church.

The church’s construction involved the talents of skilled local artisans. The life-sized statues of saints were crafted by Diosdado Opina of Silay City, while the intricate colored windows were created by Cesar Posesion of Victorias City. The Stations of the Cross, an essential feature of Catholic devotion, were meticulously made in Paete, Laguna, a town famous for its woodcarving traditions. Adding to the church’s authenticity, its bell was specially cast in Belgium, echoing the international significance of the project.

To further elevate the church’s sacred atmosphere, Cristine Sycangco Lighting Design, Inc. was commissioned to install special lighting effects both inside and outside the structure. These lighting enhancements aim to create a serene and uplifting environment for worship and reflection.

On Christmas Eve 2024

Construction of the St. James the Greater Church began in 2021, marking the realization of a vision inspired by faith and devotion. The church not only serves as a place of worship but also as a testament to the enduring connection between the Catholic faithful in the Philippines and the global Marian devotion centered in Medjugorje.

For visitors and pilgrims, the St. James the Greater Church in Talisay City offers a unique opportunity to experience the spiritual essence of Medjugorje without leaving the Philippines. It stands as a symbol of faith, artistry, and the unifying power of shared devotion.
